Oil of Oregano vs. Oregano Essential Oil: What's the Difference?

Oil of oregano and fresh oregano leaves

Oil of oregano has been used since ancient Greece, where oregano was called "joy of the mountain." Today it's one of the most popular herbal supplements on our shelves, and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what it is and how it differs from oregano essential oil.

What is oil of oregano?

Oil of oregano comes from wild oregano (Origanum vulgare), not the kitchen herb in your spice rack. The dried leaves are steam-distilled to capture the plant's natural compounds, chiefly carvacrol and thymol. Supplement labels often list the carvacrol percentage, which is the main number to compare between brands.

Oregano essential oil vs. oil of oregano

These are two different products, and the difference matters:

  • Oregano essential oil is the pure, highly concentrated oil. It's for aromatherapy and, well diluted in a carrier oil, for topical use. It is not meant to be swallowed.
  • Oil of oregano supplements are already diluted, usually in olive oil, or packed in softgels, so they can be taken by mouth as directed on the label.

Always check which one you're holding. If the bottle says "essential oil," don't take it internally.

What oil of oregano is used for

  • Supports healthy immune function.*
  • Provides antioxidant activity from carvacrol and thymol.*
  • Supports a healthy balance of microflora in the digestive tract.*
  • Supports respiratory health, especially during the winter season.*

How to take it

Oil of oregano is potent, so start with the dose on the label and don't exceed it. Liquid oil of oregano is usually taken a few drops at a time in water or juice; softgels are easier if you don't like the strong, spicy taste. Most people take it with food to avoid stomach upset.

Safety

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid it if you're allergic to oregano, thyme, basil, mint or other plants in the mint family.
  • Large amounts can upset the stomach.
  • Talk to your doctor before use if you take blood thinners or diabetes medication, or have a medical condition.

FAQ
